In How to Be an Antiracist (2019), Kendi moves seamlessly between historical analysis and personal memoir. He demonstrates, instead, that exclusionary and dehumanizing narratives about African Americans create and perpetuate racist policies and practices, which infuse the organization of American society and engender individual expressions of racist ideas. Kendi counters conventional understandings of racism as a characteristic of individuals.
