As evidence of the use of the phrase before 1904, Johnson cites only Kipling's Kim (1901) and the explorer Francis Younghusband's The Heart of a Continent (1896). Even more seriously, taking 1904 as the date of Kaye's Lives (the date of its second edition) instead of 1867, Johnson insists that “although Sir John Kaye picked up on the expression in his work …, the phrase had been current long before then”.
